The Municipal Public Library in Piekary Śląskie (Poland) invited three libraries jointed to the Sister Libraries program (Klaipėda County I. Simonaitytė Public Library in Lithuania, Nice Municipal Libraries in France, Huesca Municipal Libraries in Spain) to co-organize the international art competition entitled “Let’s do something for the climate.” The leitmotif of the competition was climate change, which is one of the biggest environmental, social and economic threats of the 21st century. We wanted to show that through commitment and daily, conscious choices, each of us can save the climate and affect the future of the planet. The aim of the competition was to build awareness of climate change, popularize the sustainable development goals, promote ecological attitudes and strengthen ties between friendly countries.
The competition was addressed to children from 6 to 14 years old in 3 age categories: 6-8 years old, 9-11 years old, 12-14 years old and consisted of doing artistic work showing what we can do as individuals to prevent negative climate change.
In total, 80 entries were submitted to the competition. The participants showed remarkable ingenuity and creativity by proposing various ways to protect the climate. By doing so, they proved that the future of our planet is very important for them.
Each of the Sister Libraries participating in the competition selected winners within each age category. The best drawings have been included in the Calendar for 2021, which was designed by our library graphic artist.
We think, that he form of the calendar will certainly contribute to consolidating pro-ecological behavior among the young generation.
Soon we intend to present all the submitted competition works at an exhibition in the Municipal Public Library in Piekary Śląskie.
We would like to thank our Partners for being so willing to cooperate and for making every effort to ensure that this initiative could be implemented.
