Book Night, a special programme aimed at the popularization of reading and raising public awareness of the significance of books in every society and period of history, this year was held on 22 April. Marking World Book and Copyright Day and Croatian Book Day, this special programme provided yet another opportunity for a wider public debate on a variety of significant issues related to books and reading.

The 2016 Book Night project included a variety of events in bookstores, second-hand bookshops, all types of libraries, schools and other similar venues and institutions all across Croatia. Book launches, public readings, book signings and get-togethers with writers and workshops around the book in all its traditional and contemporary forms were scheduled.

Apart from its already traditional evening programme, Book Night 2016 included a special matinee programme, offering activities for younger generations.

The organizers of the 2016 Book Night are the Publishers and Booksellers Association of the Croatian Chamber of Economy, National and University Library in Zagreb, Zagreb City Libraries, Publishers’ Reprographic Rights Association – ZANA (Udruga za zaštitu prava nakladnika), the Knjižni blok – Inicijativa za knjigu pro-book association and the Moderna vremena Info portal dedicated to books and culture.

Without leaving Croatia, we want to congratulate Rijeka for being chosen as European Capital of Culture for 2020.
