The purpose of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), better known as “Internet Day” is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.
It’s celebrated every 17 May coinciding the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union. This day is promoted by ITU (International Telecommunication Union) which is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies – ICTs.
This year’s theme is “ICT entrepreneurship for social impact“, in accordance with Resolution 68 and as endorsed by ITU Council 2015.
Increasingly, libraries can and should provide support for the learning and use of ICTs for the enrichment of society. Some good examples are activities that develop libraries as robotics workshops, 3D printing, APPs design, e-commerce, among others.
