The Children’s Department of the City and University Library in Osijek started the year 2025 with STEAM activities, which included an interdisciplinary approach to learning and teaching in which children were active participants in the learning process. We introduced children to famous scientists such as Marie Curie, Nikola Tesla, Albert Einstein, Ada Lovelace, Stephen Hawking, Zaha Hadid, and others through the series of picture books Little People, Big Dreams. We encouraged them to borrow books from the field of popular science and do experiments in chemistry, physics, biology, technology, and engineering, in which children have been learning about science in a fun and creative way, about concepts such as electricity, density, transpiration, polarity, capillarity, and others. They had to think critically, using the methods of observation, prediction, problem-solving, learning by trial and error, and exploration through the senses.
On Valentine’s Day, children conducted love experiments and miracle love potions, and this year we are offering activities for the school holidays with DogMan in the Library. DogMan is a wildly popular graphic novel series by American author Dav Pilkey. It recently received its animated version, and in celebration of this, the Children’s Department of the City and the University Library in Osijek and American Corner Osijek organized two workshops during the school holidays about this character. Given the fun content and the antics of the main character, the workshops were designed as a mix of play, fun, and learning. Children played numerous games and took a personality quiz. The most popular game was Smell it like a DogMan, where children had to identify the smell in the box and write it down. Due to the great popularity of the DogMan workshops, they will be repeated during the summer holidays.
