Description of sistership

Huesca Municipal Libraries in Huesca (Spain) and Panevėžys County Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė Public Library in Panevėžys (Lithuania) have formed sistership in 2018. In 2020 origami, made by library visitors and librarians in Huesca, were sent to Panevėžys County Public Library and the exhibition was organized in the Reading Room of Periodicals of the library.

The idea of making origami came to the librarians of Huesca when the traditional festival of San Lorenzo, held annually in the second week of August in Huesca, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. San Lorenzo is considered the patron of the city of Huesca. With this symbolic action, the librarians and library visitors of Huesca sought to express the idea that libraries are a safe haven during a pandemic (more info).

In October 2021 a group of librarians from Panevėžys County Library visited Huesca Municipal Libraries with Erasmus+ program. During this visit, two branches of the Huesca Municipal Libraries were visited. Lithuanian librarians got acquainted with spaces, services and activities of the libraries in Huesca and gained some innovative ideas for their projects and activities. During the same visit, the representatives of Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė public library brought to Huesca the exhibition of photographs by Rūta Šulskytė, a volunteer of the Open Space for Youth in Panevėžys County Library titled "Dialogue of Form = Connection". The exhibition was exposed in the spaces of one of the Huesca Municipal Libraries.

Due to the initiative of the Huesca Municipal Libraries, in January 2022, an exhibition of works by the students of the Huesca Art School was organised in Panevėžys County Library (more info here and here).

On the 21st of April 2022, during online international seminar “Opportunities for Adult Visitors to Learn and Spend their Free Time in Libraries” organized by Panevėžys County Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė Public Library, Alicia Rey (Project Manager of the Huesca Municipal Libraries) has presented cultural programs for the local community (more info).

In October 2023 an exhibition of the copies of artworks by Ramón Acín, an anarchist artist that was killed in Civil War in 1936 was organized in Panevėžys County Library. The copies were sent by Huesca Municipal Libraries. The artworks by Ramon Acin were discussed in the English Conversations Club "Let‘s Talk“, operating in Panevėžys County Public Library.
