Description: The Biblioteca de Castilla-La Mancha is the most important library in this region due to the value and quality of its holdings and the wide scope and variety of services it provides. The history of this library dates back to the 18th century, when in accordance to a charter from King Carlos III, Cardinal Lorenzana opened up to the public the Archiepiscopal Library. Located on the top floor ot the Alcázar of Toledo, a very importan historic and emblematic building, merges the Public Library of Toledo and the Regional Library. In its role as a public library it is concerned with providing all people a variety of open and free information and cultural outreach services. As the regional library it is the deposit for all publications in Castilla-La Mancha and serves as the head for the regional library sistem. The library hold more than 400.000 volumes between the Regional and Local Collection, Special Collections, the Borbón-Lorenzana Collection (books printed before 1900), and the Main Collection. The latter, which holds items from all topics and in all kind of formats, is in turn divided into the adult loan section, the reference section, the serial section and the children's and young adult's section. The Borbón-Lorenzana Collection is one of the most distinguished sections of the Biblioteca de Castilla-La Mancha for its value and uniqueness and one of de best bibliographic heritage collections in Spain. It consists of some 1.000 manuscripts, 414 incunabula and over 100.000 books printed between the 16th and 19th centuries. At the present, from its privileged location and as a dynamic example of union between tradition an modernity, the library continues both to promote cultural development and meet the information needs of all citizens of Toledo and Castilla-La Mancha.
