Description: The Wicklow County Council Library Service runs 13 public libraries across the county. Branches include: Greystones Bray Ballywaltrim (Bray) Wicklow Town Arklow Rathdrum Blessington Baltinglass Carnew Tinahely Aughrim Enniskerry Dunlavin There is also a mobile library service that visits more than 30 rural locations regularly. What you can do at Wicklow libraries You can borrow many types of material, including: Books and novels Audiobooks and CDs DVDs Console games Magazines and newspapers Language learning resources Many libraries also allow you to borrow up to around 12 items at a time depending on membership type. Digital services Members can also access resources online (These services are available 24/7 from home with your library card.) such as: eBooks, audiobooks online magazines and newspapers(Borrow Box) Learning platforms and language courses (Transparent Language) (Universal Class) research databases Study and computer access Free Wi-Fi Public computers Printing / scanning Study spaces They are often used as quiet work or study areas for students and remote workers. Community activities Libraries are also community hubs that host events such as: children’s story time book clubs craft workshops author talks cultural events They work with local schools and groups to promote reading and learning. Membership Membership is free. My Open Library (extended access) Wicklow Town and Arklow allowing registered users to enter the building from about 8:00 am to 10:00 pm daily, even outside normal staff hours. In Wicklow County Library Service, these three programmes are national library initiatives that your local libraries run; Right to Read Programme is a national literacy and reading programme run through Irish public libraries. Purpose: Promote reading and literacy for children, families, and adults. Encourage people to develop a lifelong habit of reading. Typical activities: Storytime sessions for children Reading challenges (e.g. Summer reading programmes) Book clubs and reading recommendations Support for parents and schools to encourage children’s reading Examples include: Spring into Storytime Summer Stars Children’s Book Festival 2. Skills for Life Skills for Life Programme is a newer national programme offered through all public libraries in Ireland. Purpose: To help adults build practical life skills through free workshops, events, and learning resources. Main skill areas: Basic digital skills (using computers, phones, internet) Financial literacy (managing money) Media literacy (understanding online information) Business and employment skills Health awareness Sustainable living and environmental awareness These are usually delivered through: Talks and workshops Training sessions One-to-one support in libraries. 3. Healthy Ireland at Your Library Healthy Ireland at Your Library is part of the national Healthy Ireland strategy. Purpose: Provide reliable health and wellbeing information through libraries. What libraries offer: Books and resources on physical and mental health Talks and workshops by health experts Information on healthy lifestyles and wellbeing Topics often include: Mental health Nutrition Physical activity Stress management Healthy ageing
