On June 3, Panevėžys Elena Mezginaitė Public Library invited the city residents to the traditional cultural bicycle ride “Librarian and Reader on a Bicycle” for the third time to celebrate World Bicycle Day. This event has become a beautiful and long-awaited tradition at the beginning of summer. It brings together the library and reader community for active leisure, and to learn about the history of the city, culture, and nature.

A bicycle ride is not just a sport or entertainment. It is a symbolic invitation to choose more sustainable travel, protect nature, get to know your environment, and strengthen mutual relations.

First, the participants of the ride visited the exhibition of the old steam locomotive at the Aukštaitija narrow-gauge railway depot, where they got acquainted with historical locomotives and remembered the city’s industrial heritage.

Later, the Nature School awaited, whose educators invited them on a short excursion and introduced them to the school’s activities and the world of plants and animals.

The third stop on the cycling route is a private antiques museum, which left an indelible impression due to its rich collection of unique old exhibits.

Finally, the participants gathered for a picnic on the lawn, where they shared their impressions, rested, and discussed the moments of the hike. It turned out that almost 30 cycling enthusiasts, together with library representatives, successfully covered more than 30 km of the route.

As part of this year’s Panevėžys city event series “Let’s Meet on Friday”, Panevėžys Elena Mezginaitė Public Library invited city residents to various educational activities for the whole family for three weekends in a row. The events took place in Laisvės Square and attracted active interest from the townspeople.

The first meeting of this year’s “Let’s Meet on Friday” was a great start to the opening of the season. Young participants could unleash their imagination and create a bike that they would like to take on adventurous journeys. With Father’s Day approaching, the creative workshops were filled with warm handmade gifts – children created postcards for their fathers, wrote sincere wishes, and decorated them.

During the second meeting, we invited them to immerse themselves in the unexpected world of dialects. We presented the beauty and diversity of Lithuanian dialects playfully. Participants embarked on a word journey in the game “Do you know the ancient names of the months?”. Only a few knew, and some were getting acquainted with the rarely forgotten archaic names of the months for the first time.

The third meeting was dedicated to the celebration of Knitting in Public Day. Freedom Square was filled with yarn, knitted patterns, and creativity. During the event, knitting workshops were held, where those gathered not only learned new techniques, but also shared their accumulated experience, creative ideas, and friendly conversations. Needles and threads united in a common rhythm – the joy of knitting, which united participants of different ages. Young visitors and their parents were invited to the educational program “Wormwood Zigmas meadow” – a fun and colorful educational program that encouraged children to explore, learn, and develop fine motor skills through games and songs.

All three meetings revealed that we are a lively, open community where people of all ages can meet, communicate, create, and improve.

Midsummer is a special time of year, full of old traditions, symbolizing the prosperity of nature, the peak of light, and transformation. This long day and short night was celebrated by the people of Panevėžys on Monday, June 23, in Skaistakalnis Park. The event had no shortage of activities, interesting things, and fun activities for both young and old.

The educational zone of the Panevėžys Elena Mezginaitė Public Library became one of the most active and popular spaces among visitors at the festival. There, festival participants had the opportunity to engage in meaningful activities aimed at both cognition and creativity, and games.

We invited visitors to try the educational, fun, and at the same time informative board game “Etno”. It is designed to get acquainted with the ethnographic regions of Lithuania – Aukštaitija, Samogitia, Dzūkija, Suvalkija, and Lithuania Minor – and their cultural features and customs. During the game, participants solved questions about calendar holidays, traditional crafts, everyday life of people, folklore, mythology, traditional music, clothing, and dialects.

The creative workshop “Magic of Plant Seals” attracted great interest. Here, anyone who wanted to could try the plant print technique and create colorful postcards on linen fabric or bookmarks on colored cardboard.

Children could get creative – draw plant motifs on natural pebbles. This activity especially attracted the youngest visitors to the festival, who willingly took up the work, using special felt-tip pens. Drawing not only developed their imagination and artistic skills, but also encouraged interest in nature and details.

All these summer activities show that the library invites not only to read, but also to engage in interesting, active, creative activities that bring the entire community together and bring them closer.
