Elections for the Year Book have been held annually since 2005. And has already become an important traditional Lithuanian cultural event. This promotion was included in the Reading Promotion Program approved by the Government in 2006.

Elections for the Year Book were initiated by the Association for Reading and Cultural Literacy and are organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, Lithuanian National Radio and Television and Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania.

The aim of the campaign is to encourage Lithuanian residents to become interested in contemporary Lithuanian literature and to raise the prestige of reading in our society. The idea of the campaign is to present the best works of Lithuanian literature published last year in the categories of children, teenagers, adults and poetry books. 2018 a fifth category is included: journalism and documentary.

This is not the first time our library is participating in the campaign, sending out applications to win five children’s books. We are delighted that we received five books this year as well. In the application, we wrote how we would present the books.

On November 7 we presented Vytautas V.Landsbergis book for children “Pūkis karalius” (The King Pukis), about a little fox. The book teaches the simple thing that reigning is first and foremost about caring for others. After learning how to help Mommy, the little fox feels like a real king and receives royal gifts.
